The crew of fourteen having our last civilized dinner at marble canyon lodge.

Orientation at Lee’s Ferry

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Fourteen in all, the group meets officially this sunny Tuesday morning. Introductions and revelations on gear storage, community dynamics and boat-partners are going well, although there are many ‘leaders’ with opinions.

Vegas baby!

Do not stop in Vegas. Do not collect $200.00

Going with the flow

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

We split the drive to Flagstaff into two days, with a stop at Fish Lake Valley hot springs in between. The springs were nice: a concrete soaking pool at about 104 degrees and a fifty gallon a minute flow! It was like a hot lap pool.

Desert driving at its best, we roll on through Nevada towards sin city.

We’re off!

Dry bags are stuffed full of clothes, snacks and shelter; there is still gear on the bed…

Prioritizing which gear to leave behind almost gets in the way of accidentally leaving something behind.

We’re watching the progress of hurricane Ike through Texas as we finalize our departure, hopefully the flooding theme will burn out before we launch!

More to come from the iPhone… stay tuned.

Time is a blur

We are approaching the departure date for our Grand Canyon rafting adventure, and I can’t help but sometimes imagine myself a character in a Disney movie about perspective gained from complete severance from society. Cruising has been a fantasy for that allure more than all the others: to be out of the loop, off the track, hardly observing the rat race, much less participating.

In the midst of this ordered chaos, I am soliciting the yacht club for more participants on the Sea of Cortez cruise next Spring. After our rafting trip, that will be the next great adventure.

I am going to attempt to blog from the Canyon, but at best I hope to return with some belated entries. We hit the water next Wednesday. Stay tuned for more…
