Bienvenidos from Cabo San Lucas!

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Ahhh, Mexico. Hot, humid, land of fermented cactus…

I have settled into my berth on S/V Home Free, and made the necessary repairs to the autopilot. My only crew, Bruce, is scheduled to arrive tomorrow afternoon, and we will be departing as fast as he can buy food, to try to make our first leg by the 4th.

Here are some shots of the boat and the marina at Puerto Los Cabos:

From San Francisco International Airport:

Only a non-stop flight away from Cabo, this trip is beginning to manifest. Given the short notice, the whirlwind of preparation has gone pretty well. The whole thing is feeling surreal, which will probably wear off about the time I am checking back into the states in San Diego in a week.

I have picked up some replacement parts for the autopilot, checked my bags and drank my coffee; boarding in minutes.

I will update from Cabo this afternoon with pics of the boat, “Home Free”.

Baja Bash!

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

I have been hired to deliver a sailboat from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (the southern end of the Baja peninsula), all the way North to San Francisco Bay! Due to a number of crew cancellations, the owner is unable to do the trip, and the boat needs to be back in Richmond as part of the Tradewinds Sailing Club fleet by the end of the month. So, on short notice, I am flying down to Cabo on Saturday, and will be setting sail for San Francisco on Monday the 2nd of March! Word has it that AT&T has pretty good coverage for the length of the coast, at a minimum I hope to get off a few blogs on my way up the coast, so stay tuned!!!

The Baja Bash is named for the prevailing NW winds on this NW passage. The open Pacific swell ranges from 5 to 20 feet! Add in the Humboldt current, flowing about one knot down the North American coast, and you have the variables stacked against you. Upwind, up-swell, and up-current, the ride is anything but smooth. Fortunately, the weather looks good this time of year, and the consensus is that I should be able to make landfall in the Bay on Friday the 13th of March.

Now… Time to pack!
